North East Area Group meeting information.

This months meeting is being held slightly later than normal on the 15th August and we will be continuing with our layout planning theme.

At the last two meetings we had an insight into how two of our own group members viewed the subject of layout planning as well as, in both cases, the way the plans had been realised. Edward with Niddbeck Bridge and Tony with Brafferton. I feel sure you would have taken ideas away from those sessions.

This time we will be getting a different slant on planning and instead of me having to cajole (sorry, invite) another group member to take the floor we will be giving good old NE welcome to none other than Iain Rice. Whilst exhibiting Wansbeck Road at Epsom Show this year Yvonne and I found ourselves exhibiting alongside the P4 ‘Trerice’ and I’m happy to say Iain accepted the invitation to come along and talk to us on the subject of planning.

There can’t be very many of you who haven’t looked at a ‘Rice scheme’ at some stage and begun adapting it to your own needs. Even if you’ve not done that it’s very possible you have spent some time browsing through one of the many books or magazines in which he has either written or had a part. I always think it was a great pity Railmodel Digest didn’t continue.

Iain has a very readable writing style and a lot of his ideas are well worthy of consideration. Indeed there are some easily spotted ‘Rice isms’ on WBR. Such things as view blockers and jigsaw pieces to disguise baseboard joints to name but two.

Iain will be doing a presentation entitled Modelling the ‘Realistic’ way. It should make for an interesting afternoon and I look forward to seeing you all on the day.

More news from WBR



























































Here is the update I promised albeit a little later than intended (been moving sheds in the allotment etc. etc..!) and is primarily a series of pictures showing the progress with the basics of the track construction and the extra mileage for the bus to travel.
All of the track on the extension is, as you would expect, Easitrac.

The first picture shows the cast bases procured by the Easitrac team to assist with baseboard joints and track feeds. In this instance they are being used as baseboard end 'anchors' this particular part of the baseboard being the train table fiddle yard. Clearly seen are the isolating cuts. The sleepers can be cut anywhere in the 4' foot way but I have chosen to cut them in the centre and because there is little need for any infill here I have left quite a wide gap. On the scenic section these gaps will be filled with something like Milliput. I have drilled four holes for each sleeper one either side of the rail to fix them to board with pins. One thing I did notice with the cast sleepers is when cast they come out slightly larger than the styrene bases that went into the casting process so they do need to be cut before 'threading' them on to the rail' since if left untouched they will be slightly over gauge. I chose to do this with a piercing saw as opposed to a grinding disc. The second shot shows brass bases in the scenic section.

The next view, a general one of most all of the track that will be in the public viewing area of the extension, gives some indication of the trial and error that was needed to get the bus to do what I wanted. Viewers may discern the balsa wood edging to the baseboard front. I had fixed the gradient too steeply and this re-adjustment was necessary to ensure the bus didn't have too much work to do to get to the top of the hill. I have 'fiddled' with the bus mechanism to get it to run slowly and one effect of this is it has limits when climbing hills....! (it fairly rattles down the bank mind..!)

The last two pictures show the basis of the traintable, an old record player turntable deck, and a second shot with some track laid thereon. I completed the tracklaying on the layout extension and the traintable in under four hours.
